Three things are well established going into the event:

  • The port is USB-C, again. Apple moved to USB-C in 2023 under EU regulation and has no reason to go back.

What Apple will put in the box: almost certainly nothing but a cable. Apple stopped including chargers in 2020, and there is no report of that changing.

Which iPhone 18 charger should you buy?

You do not need an "iPhone 18 charger" as a special product category. You need a USB-C adapter with enough headroom. Here is the honest breakdown by situation.

If you own any 30W+ USB-C charger

Keep it. The iPhone draws what it negotiates and ignores the adapter's maximum. A 30W adapter charges an iPhone at full wired speed; 45W and above only matters if you also power a laptop or want the fastest possible 0-50% window that the iPhone 17 Pro line demonstrated (about 20 minutes to 50% with Apple's 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, per Apple's product page).

If you are buying new

As an iPhone 18 charger, a 45W GaN unit is the sweet spot: small and cool-running, with enough power for any iPhone plus an iPad or MacBook Air. Multi-port versions let you charge two devices at once.

Cables matter more than people expect

What not to buy before you pick an iPhone 18 charger

Two categories to skip for now:

  • "iPhone 18 certified" chargers listed before launch. Nothing third-party can be certified for a phone that has not shipped. The label is marketing.
  • Ultra-cheap multi-port 100W+ bricks from unknown brands. High wattage across shared ports with thin internal components is where the fire-risk reports concentrate. Stick to brands with a warranty presence in your country.

Will the iPhone 18 come with a charger in the box?
