USB to USB-C: the everyday dongle
This is what most people mean by a USB to USB-C adapter: a small plug that bridges legacy USB-A gear to modern cables. Car chargers, old drives, desktop ports, hand-me-down power bricks. Most are wired for USB 2 speeds, meaning about 480 megabits per second, and that is fine for charging a phone or syncing photos. What they cannot do is carry a 5Gbps or 10Gbps transfer, no matter how fast the drive on the other end is.
Charging note: a USB-A brick delivers its own ceiling, typically 12 watts or less. The dongle is rarely the bottleneck; the port behind it is.
OTG adapters: the phone becomes the host
An OTG (on-the-go) adapter lets a phone or tablet act as the host, so a flash drive or card reader shows up in the Files app. iPhones from the 15 onward read drives this way over USB-C, and Android has supported it for years. Keyboards and mice work too. Buy the short stub style: no cable to fatigue, and it lives on a keychain.
USB-C to USB-C: couplers and extenders
A USB-C to USB-C adapter usually means a female-to-female coupler for joining two cables or extending a run. Cheap ones are wired for USB 2 only, which silently caps the whole chain at 480 Mbps. If you are joining laptop charging cables, the listing must state 5A and 100W support; couplers without a stated rating should stay on light duty.
Video adapters: DisplayPort Alt Mode
This is the one type c adapter purchase where a wrong buy is expensive. Video out requires DisplayPort Alt Mode support on the host port, which not every USB-C port has, and the adapter must be built for it. iPhones from the 15 onward support it and can drive an external display this way. Which adapters quietly limit you
Speed and power problems through adapters come from four places:
- USB 2 wiring. The adapter runs the whole chain at 480 Mbps. This is the default for cheap dongles and couplers.
- Charge-only designs. No data pins means no file transfer, no OTG, and no video. Fine for a bedside cable, useless for anything else.
- Current ratings. 3A supports 60W; anything at 100W or above needs 5A with an E-Marker chip identifying the cable. An unrated adapter in the chain becomes the ceiling.
- The port itself. Several iPhones, including the 16e, the Air, and the standard 17, have USB 2 ports. A 10Gbps adapter cannot speed those up; the ceiling is inside the phone.
Charging through adapters: where watts get lost
Every adapter in a charging path is a negotiation point. Legacy USB-A dongles cap at the brick's rating. Unrated couplers asked to carry 100W to a laptop either renegotiate down or cut out under load. Newer iPhones add PD 3.2 SPR AVS negotiation (the latest USB Implementers Forum Power Delivery revision) on top of plain PD, and the simplest advice is to keep the charging path direct: cable to adapter, nothing in between. Three checks before you buy
- Data or charge-only? If the listing does not say, assume charge-only and keep looking, unless you only need power.
- What speed is it rated for? USB 2 (480 Mbps), 5 Gbps, and 10 Gbps are the common ratings, with USB4 above them. The chain moves at the slowest link, so match the adapter to your device rather than paying for more.
- How much power can it pass? 60W covers phones and thin laptops. Machines that charge at 100W-class rates need 5A and E-Marker support. 240W EPR exists for full-size laptops and is overkill for phones.
